Sea fishing line

Sea fishing line

The material used for sea fishing has a lot to endure during a fishing day. Compared to other fisheries, it is all a bit coarser and stronger when fishing at sea, as is the fishing line.

The fishing line suffers a lot with many sea fishing techniques. In beach fishing, the fishing line has to put away high lead weights. Every time you throw the beach rod and seabed fish mill, enormous forces are placed on the fishing line and knots. When fishing from a pier or in fish-rich wrecks, the line has to be sand resistant again. If you are away from active sea bass fishing, the line should not be too thick again and preferably not visible. Whatever part of sea fishing you prefer, a sea fish is often different from a Dutch freshwater fish. Most marine fish fight harder and longer on heavier material, so the fishing line has to be calculated for this.

Nylon fishing line

Nylon line is the most commonly used fishing line in sea fishing and therefore also in beach fishing. The big advantage of this fishing line for sea fishing is the abrasion resistance. In the sea you often have to deal with many obstacles in front of the line such as mussels, stones, rubbish and more. In addition, nylon has the strong advantage that it stretches and is therefore able to absorb the first blows of the thrown sea lead. It also ensures that the lead is not quickly pulled out of the sand. The disadvantage of the rack is the bite registration on long distances. That's why beach anglers often choose nylon with less stretch.
Because of the obstacles in the water, it is wise to use pre-stretch. Always take it a bit thicker than the main line and don't make it too short. To give you an idea what strengths and diameters you can use, some advice is given below.

Line thickness advice

Shore / Transvises: under normal circumstances 0.30 to 0.40mm is sufficient. In combination with a front stroke of about 0.50mm you can also handle spots with obstacles.

Boatfishing in the Netherlands: when boating you often use a somewhat stiffer rod and you need to get the fish away from the bottom or wreck as quickly as possible. That is why you take a nylon line that lies between 0.45 and 0.60mm. Depending on the species you are fishing for.

Sea fishing offshore: very dependent on the type of fish and the way of fishing offshore. Throwing with lures from the shore, 0.30mm can be sufficient for small fish up to a maximum of 0.50mm for medium sized fish.

Sea fishing foreign boat: very dependent on the type of fish again where you fish but at least 0.45mm to sometimes as much as 1.2mm.

Dynema line / braided line

Braided line has a number of properties that we can make good use of when fishing at sea. With a much thinner diameter, it is much stronger than nylon. It has no stretch and also has a longer lifespan. The smaller diameter allows more line on the same spool, which comes in handy with long outstanding lines when sea fishing. Also, the line will have less resistance in the water. Your bite registration is very direct due to the lack of elongation. Especially setting the hook at a distance, goes very well with this braided line. When wreck fishing or near obstacles, you can direct the fish more directly. The modern dynema can be used both on a sail mill and on a sea fish reel.
But beware. Despite the many advantages for sea fishing, there is one very important disadvantage. Braided lines are not as abrasion resistant as nylon. Because it is less ''forgiving'' the many obstacles in the sea are a great danger for line use. If you still want to fish with braided lines, we recommend using a nylon or fluorocarbon forerunner.

Fluorocarbon

The properties with which fluorocarbon line distinguishes itself are the following. It is virtually invisible under water and has a high abrasion resistance. Furthermore, it sinks faster than nylon or braided line. In addition, this line has less elongation than nylon. The best fishing line you would say. 100% fluorocarbon is pricey, so most people use it as a forcing line. In combination with dynema you create a perfect fishing line. Little elongation for good bite registration and successful crocheting and invisible last meters. Shy fish such as sea bass will put their suspicions aside and even in extremely clear water you will not be able to see it.

Line thickness advice

Beach/Shore fishing: 0.24mm to 0.28mm is a fine diameter. Don't take the front end of nylon and/or fluorocarbon too thin, otherwise there will be a very big difference in tensile strength. Take at least 0.50mm.

Boat fishing: A diameter between 0.28mm and 0.35mm is usually sufficient. If you want a little more damping, use nylon or fluorocarbon of at least 0.60mm.

Sea bass: This fish has a hard mouth which makes dynema advisable. Without elongation in this braided line, you can set the hook better. Line thicknesses between 0.14mm and 0.20mm are recommended. If you use a nylon or fluorocarbon forerunner, at least 0.45mm is recommended.
