Predator rigs & end tackle

Predator rigs & end tackle

You can't go predatory fishing without an underline. You don't need to lose any fish yourself, but it also makes sure that a pike doesn't stay behind with a lure in his mouth. Please note that an underline also has disadvantages. A wrong bottom line can scare off fish or make lures move in a different way. So it is important to choose the best bottom line and the material that is needed.

For predatory fishing you have several species underline. The most important underline to distinguish are for throwing fish and dead bait fish.
For casting fish with crankbaits, for example, usually a metal underline is used, also called steel underline. Why steel? The pike's teeth are often so sharp that only steel cannot be broken. This can be a normal steel wire or one made of titanium, with a length of about 10 to 30 cm.
If you go fishing with a spinner or jerkbait, you can also choose to use a spinner rod instead of a steel one. With a spinner it ensures that the line doesn't kink and with a jerkbait you have the advantage that it prevents it from getting tangled up quickly.
Steel bottom lines are mainly used for pike fishing. Do you specifically go perch or zander fishing? Then you can also choose to fish with a fluorocarbon bottom line. These are less visible.
For dead lure fishing you need a different bottom line, sometimes called a rig because they are equipped with a hook or treble. This is usually a steel line with treble at the end and often a hook or treble halfway the line. This allows you to secure the dead fish in a firm way. These hooks are often longer than other hooks, about 30 to 40 cm.
There are also bottom lines for softbaits that aren't equipped with hooks, similar to a dead lure bottom line, but these are often shorter, about 10 to 20 cm.

Underline material

You can also make your own predatory fish underline, for this you need separate underline materials. You can make it as simple or complex as you want. The basic materials for each rig are at least a solid swivel at the top and a sharp treble or hook at the bottom. These are connected to a steel or titanium underline. You can also choose to attach the hooks or trebles with a sleeve.

Tip: a standard unhooking pliers can often not cut a steel bottom line, so make sure you also have a pair of pliers with you.
